Treat Tuesday - Festive Cranberry Biscuits
December 5, 2017
Picture
Here is a festive snack that makes a great treat for our furry friends. Mixed with cranberries, pumpkin, oatmeal, and peanut butter, Fido will be happy! Shout out to The Cottage Market for this creative recipe!
What You’ll Need:
Picture
Whole Wheat Flour
1 1/2 cups
Picture
Flax Seed
1/2 cup
Picture
Peanut Butter
1/2 cup
Picture
Oat Flour
1 1/2 cups
Picture
Pure Canned Pumpkin
1 cup
Picture
Dried Cranberries
1/2 cup
Picture
Egg
2 large eggs
Baking Instructions:
  1. Crack the two eggs into your mixing bowl and beat for about one minute. Add the packed pumpkin and then add the peanut butter. Beat until the mixture is creamy.
  2. Slowly add your flours and then add the dried cranberries until you get a thick dough. If the dough is a bit sticky just add more flour and if it is too dry add a little more peanut butter.
  3. Flour your work area and take the dough out of the bowl and put it on the floured surface. Roll the dough to approximately 1/4″ thickness and then make your treat shapes with your favorite cookie cutter! Gather the scraps and roll them out and start cutting out shapes till all the dough is used.
  4. Line two cookie trays with parchment paper and place the treats on. The treats can be close together since they do not rise.
  5. Bake in a 350 oven for 30 minutes. Let cool.
  6. The treats will last in a well-sealed container for about ten days.  If you know you are not going to use them, pack them up in freezer bags and place them in the freezer and just take them out as needed. They will last for six months in the freezer.
Tips:
Do not substitute raisins for dried cranberries. Raisins (and grapes) are toxic to dogs.

Picture
What pup doesn’t love bacon? This Treat Tuesday we’re featuring this fun-to-make Bacon Cookie recipe from myrecipes.
What You’ll Need:
Picture
Uncured Bacon
3 slices
Picture
Whole Wheat Flour
2 1/4 cups
Picture
Toasted Wheat Germ
1/2 cup
Picture
Picture
Picture
Flax Seed
1/2 cup
Nonfat Dry Milk
1/2 cup
Egg
1 Large Egg

Picture
Low Sodium Chicken Broth
1 cup
Picture
Chopped Parsley
1/3 cup
Baking Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line two large shallow baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Heat a medium nonstick skillet over medium and cook bacon until crisp, turning once or twice, about 6-7 minutes. Drain, transfer to a cutting board, and finely chop it. Reserve 1 tbsp fat.
  3. Combine the chopped bacon, flour, wheat germ and dry milk in a medium bowl. Whisk together reserved bacon fat, egg, chicken broth and parsley in a separate bowl. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir with a spoon or rubber spatula until rough dough forms. Knead the dough in the bowl 5-6 times until it comes together.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and roll out to a 1/4-inch thickness. With a 2-inch round cookie cutter, cut out treats and transfer to the prepared baking sheets. Press all the scraps together, kneading once or twice, then roll out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out more treats; repeat if necessary.
  5. Bake treats until lightly browned and fairly hard, rotating the pans from top to bottom once, about 35-40 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool completely; biscuits will harden as they cool. Store in an airtight container.
Tips:
Some of these ingredients might not be readily available in your home pantry. You can find whole wheat flour, wheat germ and flaxseed at your local grocery store in the baking aisle or the organic aisle!
